The German Federal Institute of Hydrology (BfG) is a scientific institution ranking as a supreme federal agency of Germany. BfG’ research has its focus in the fields of hydrology, water management, and water protection. The German Federal Institute of Hydrology advises different federal ministries and their subordinated authorities, especially the Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV), in matters of utilisation and management of the German federal waterways. BfG operates an operational forecasting centre for the German parts of the waterways Rhine and Danube (focus on navigation-related forecasts) and develops and maintains the forecasting systems for the River Elbe and Odra (navigation-related and flood forecasting).
